There is a possibly under-used feature in AF, and that is level restrictions. The only place I know of that it is used is in AF for minor orcs. Basicly, it is a rule that says you need to be X level before that encounter can happen.

The question I'm putting forth is, do you think this could be utilized in some clever way on a future board? Theoretically, you could put every monster in the game on one level, and use this restriction to keep the death toll down, but that wouldn't be as much fun.

Maybe u could make an experimental area to see how it works. But to whom it be available? How could be made to let the functionality of other areas intact? How to be done to be tempting but not too much :)... To let the others areas to be temting also. The balance is hard to find even in real life:)
Just a few thoughts...

I think it would be best used to include bosses on levels. You could have, say, a village of goblins ruled by a dragon. Until you are the right level you would only have goblin based encounters. When you are a high enough level the Dragon becomes a possibility.

This would also be a good clue that you have reached an appropriate level for this area.

Just my two coppers.

Hmm interesting, although it takes away some of the challenge.

The fact that Death is not lethal in this game, lol, is I think enough of a teacher to the players.

A guy can die, and when that happens he will watch out better next time, and probably avoid certain foes or areas.

But the idea of bosses is nice; in Doom,Quake and other succes games ... when u reach at to finish a stage u have a last level trial.. a level boss than will learn u how to behave :)
Opinions!

To don't take of the challenge this wouldn't mean that someone is quite ready for next levels, just that he reach a stage, but nothing more... indeed is nice to walk carefully when u think u'll meet a Giant Reef that could make u meat for a dinner :)

That's a nice idea. But I would install bosses rather on a certain amount of kills at an area or an amount of energy spent.

The thing with bosses is that I'd like to have them give items that require you to get to the next level. As it is now, there isn't a single monster in the game that you HAVE to fight to get anywhere. I think that's what I'm waiting for before I make the Dungeon of Infinity.

This idea is nice...So if u don't kill the monster u must train better, and better .... till u put him with his face in dust, for let him know who's gonna pass the gates!... :)
And the drop of items make me happy :))

Other online adventure games do require that you obtain keys to access differant areas in the game. The idea is not without prescedent.

I thought that I'll win some magic item not jus a key... For me a key is dissapointing comparing with a powerful item that makes u a stronger adventurer! :)

I need even now of that Key of Offence; 300 OFF could make me unbeatable in face of a Reef Giant... :)

"An old man approaches you holding a strange medallion. "Here, take this. It will allow you to breath under water. But beware! Danger lurks around every reef, and the water slows you down so much you can't avoid beasties. I almost got killed down there, but maybe if you're lucky, you'll find the Sunken Pirate Ship's treasures!"

This was the item to enter SPS!

But I wonder where are that promissed treasures?
