Federations are a group (5) empires that have agreed to work together for a common goal, at least in theory. As a federation member, you can vote for a leader, donate minerals and power to use by other members, and place ships into a pool to be used by all the members of you federation.

How do you join a federation, you ask? Quite simple, ask. Message other players, and they will tell you yes or no. As a noob, federations are not gonna be beating down your doors begging you to join them, and lots of players have people they work well with, so chances of you getting into a great federation are not all that good, but it doesn't mean give up hope. There used to be noob feds, and some of the experianced players have taken it upon themselves to put SC 101, or SC university feds to help you. You could always round up a few noobs yourself and form a federation, but you have to reach 10,000 in score to do so.

To apply, or form a fed, click on the "Federations" link, and if applying, select the application, then the fed you want to apply to. If you are creating a fed, theres a handy "create federation" button. Type in a snappy fed name, and you are off to the world of feddom.

The way a fed works is really simple:

"Every federation member has one vote in determining the federation leader."

Vote for who you want to be the fed leader. What lots of feds do, is leave this alone, so that if "a" empire needs mins from the fed coffers, "a" empire takes the vote, gives himself the mins, and returns his vote to "none", for the next needy empire.

"Donations can be given to your federation. The federation leader can pass out any resources to needy gangs. Donated spaceships will be used either as offence or defence to help the federation battles. Only empires with atleast 5000 score can donate. 10% is used for transport.
So, if i want to fill the fed coffers, i goes something like this: 12000 mins and 1200 ships = 10000 mines in coffers and 1200 ships in the fed fleet. (this has changed btw)

The numbers in () is the current federation coffers.
simple enough right?

The federation coffers can max have 10000 minerals and 10000 power. You can at most donate 20% of your ships in one order.
better said- 20% of the ship TYPE you are trying to donate.

You can at most donate 10 minerals and power per donated spaceship.
simply put, you have to donate ships to donate minerals and power. (not anymore)

Donating costs 5 Action Points."
okies, not to hard to figure out.

You can leave your federation by pressing this button.
only if you want to leave, silly.

These options are only open for the federation leader, YOU.
you will see this if you have enough votes to be the fed leader.

The following Empires wants to join your federation.
click on the accept or deny button do either accept or deny the empire.

Throw out a single empire :
again, only if you want to, silly.

You can transfer the federations minerals and power to any of the empires in this federation.
plug in the numbers and select the empire you want the mins and/or power to go to, and push the button thingy.

Send a message to all federation members.
be the boss, and tell them all what to do, or what color skivvies to wear!

Federation description

Here you can write a description of your federation which will be shown to anyone looking at your federation.
uh, we dont want to really hear that you are gonna rule the universe, but something cool makes good reading, i guess.

thats fed 101, again, feel free to ask for help, we are always watching!

Do your command centers have to account for federation ships? It seems not to be the case. I could have 100% fleet control, donate 20% of my ships and then I'm down to 80% eventhough in a battle my donated ships will join me.

okie a couple of things. 1) you no longer need to donate fed ships to donate mins and power to coffers. 2) fed ships do not use command centers. 3) and fed ships you put in need to be replaced in you own fleet if you want to fix you fc.

Your "seems not to be the case" is true. The control of federation fleet is a mystery of the galaxy - they control themselves with 100% precision everytime. You only need to have fleet command centers (and space ports, btw) for your personal fleet.
