Thread: Star Wars Epsiode III

Is there anyone not looking forward to it?

N.B. I have noticed that there hasn't been any Off Topic posts recently, so I decided to make one.

I just hope it's better than I and II

Episode III is the lynchpin of the whole movie series. If GL screws this one up, I think someone will try to kill him. I think my whole problem with the first two movies is that he used cgi as a crutch for a poor story, whereas in IV-VI the movies were good BECAUSE of the story (with the cutting edge special effects serving a complimentary, as opposed to a primary, role). In all cases, the acting of the lead characters is bad, so I can't really cite that as why I and II were not up to snuff.

I am not looking forward to it. Will probably not even go to the movies to watch it, just rent it on video.

I and II sucked.

Ditto what InsaneClown said. GL has enough street cred with 4-6 that he could put out the worst crap ever and the fans will go see it.

I'll go see it simply because it's Star Wars. Besides, who wants to miss that key moment when Anikan becomes Darth Vader? Even if it is the worst movie ever made that moment, that defining scene, will make it worth seeing.

Oh gosh, I seemed to have drooled on myself thinking about Star Wars.

I got the book yesterday and am half way through it. It's phenominal. However, that doesn't mean that the movie will be. (the book gets into people's heads pretty heavily, which is why it's phenominal, and something a movie can't do unless it's the Shawshank Redemption)

i am sooooo sick of everyone bad mouthing eps 1&2. good god, did you all forget that eps 4 was state of the art effects at the time? there HAD to be huge characters and story, or the man would have be stuck doing b- rated movies for life. look at the remade scenes he has done, do you think he really cares as deeply about the story and characters as he does the visual appaerance? lucas=effects. the man has dedicated his life to special effects, and everyone wants to jump all over him for plots, story and characters. bah! look into the art of the movie and beyond what you want the movies to be. then you can accept the story and characters for nessicary parts of a masterpiece. sentires, out!

jddegraff: Lucas special effects are now second rate compared to the matrix and Lord of the Rings. Lucasarts is no longer cutting edge, and when he stuffs his movies with second rate special effects, it comes off as a second rate movie when the story is too poor to back it up.

I've finished the book, and it remained phenominal. The story is downright excellent, and I'm convinced that Lucas conceived this story before he even made 4-6, but it wouldn't have made sense to start with 3, so he just skipped over it. In light of this book, I think Lucas had the mentality that Episodes 1 and 2 were just things to "get out of the way" to get to 3, because, really, except for the death of Anakin's mother and the initiation of the clone wars, there really is nothing critical in Episode II, and almost entirely nothing critical in Episode I. Episode I could almost be squeezed into a 10 minute flashback in Episode III to tell us anything we needed to know.

The whole Anikan to Vader thing is a big reason to see the movie. But the biggest reason (not that it will happen, but I can hope) would be the death of Jar Jar Binks. Oh and if Yoda flies around the screen again, that was classic.

Speddles: Your true meaning of the movie has angered me and my friends...this means war from the cult of Jar Jar Binks. Prepare for absolutley nothing!

as for graphics being 2nd rate compared to Matrix & LotR, won't seem that way to this viewer...since I have not seen any movie of either of those triologys due to their lead actors, just based on their prior movie credits. So not seeing a series starring the dude from Speed or the kid from Flipper won't ruin the computer animation of a driod being mowed down by a lightsaber for me :)

My top 3 favorite movies:

1.) Exorcist
2.) The Shining
3.) Texas Chainsaw Massacre

See any similarities? Don't get me wrong, I thought the OLD Star Wars movies were amazing but just no my cup o' Joe.

My top films are:

1) The Machinist
2) The Butterfly Effect
3) Oldboy(I can't believe Hollywood is making a sequel I hope it fails!!)
4) Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
5) Donnie Darko/The Garden State(Not sure which I would classify as better)

As you can probably tell from those I'm not into blood/horror/mindless as much as I am into the story and meaning of the film.

I think that some of the weaknesses in I and II (and probably III too) is that they have alot of mandatory ground to cover for the story to link up with IV. All in all I find them enjoyable. And you can't knock the lightsabers.
Post by: slangi(11441)

nope cant knock the lightsabers at all they had to shoot the scenes with the dude playing anakin in episode 2 and 3 multiple times because they couldnt get him to stop making the sound effects when he was swinging it around.... i can see that now

Director: GAH CUT!!! ive told you fifty times WE do the sound effects!

I remember being excited when phantom menace was a couple months from being released. Then I saw a commercial on TV and Yoda was fighting for a taco. Right then, I lost all interest in everything star wars.

Eventually, after my friends made me watch episode 1. I proclaimed and still stand by my opinion that the best acting in Phantom Menace was done by R2D2.

If 4-6 weren't made already, there would be no point to 1 and 2. As they were written, they can't stand on their own.

I agree with Doug. Episode I and II just plain sucked. The only reason I watched both of them were BECAUSE of episodes 4 to 6. If not for them, I never would have sat through E1 (probably THE worst movie, I have ever watched from start to end) and thus would never have considered watching E2.

wats up with star wars man? y dont people talk about "star" trek. lol i got this funny idea that a person dressed up a darth vader(or whoever) would walk in a star trek convention. wat do u think would happen?

The Star Wars vs. Star Trek debate has raged for decades. While Star Wars has the hyperdrive going for it, Star Trek is much more advanced in almost every area over Star Wars. I think one galaxy class ship could tear apart a star destroyer in minutes. I mean, in star wars, they are still using (snicker) Lasers!

Post by: Dalvian(38356)
2005-07-01 06:27:36
Yeah, but all you have to do is put Jar Jar Binks in the engine room of the Enterprise and all chaos would erupt.

and if you are talking original series all you would have to do is introduce Cpt. Kirk to Princess Leia and the battle would be over.

Not to mention having Chewbacca debate phillosophy with Spock.

Keep in mind that an entire Federation Fleet got whooped by one Borg Cube but two squadrons of Rebel starfighters took out the Death Star.

If a Wookie, a Smuggler, a Farmboy, an old man, and two 50 year old robots could sneak into the Death star, rescue a princess, and then blast their way out imagine what they would do to a starbase. There would be dead red shirted people all over the place.

I have to disagree. Star Trek ships have intruder alert systems, something the Death Star didn't have. While it is true that the prowess of individuals could certainly do some damage on both sides, my argument is about the technology. A borg cube could assimilate a star destroyer in about 5 minutes. The fact that a cube is a hive minded collective strewn with redundancies means it does not have the weakness that the death-star did. Sure, assuming that the starfighters weren't smashed to bits on the cube's shields and actually entered the cube (a tight fit for a fighter to be sure, I wouldn't expect nice straight corridors in there), I don't think they could do any substantial damage anyway that couldn't be compensated for.

The only reasonable option for the SD in this instance is to ram the cube, except that a SD could never match a cube in maneuverablity and sub-light speed.

The best option for the cube is to hit a SD bridge with one of those really neat slicing beams, hack off the conning tower that has the shield generators, and the whole ship would be utterly defenseless. The best weapon the Empire has, the Death Star, probably couldn't even target a cube., and all the stormtroopers in the place aren't gong to stop the borg (although there is a case to be made that their armor might protect their necks from the nanoprobe injectors, at least eliminating casual assimilations. Also, Stormtroopers would use explosives, something red shirts almost never use, which I guess would be to their advantage).

Space Opera Vs. Hard Science fiction is pretty hard to do. Their basic natures make it hard to match up. While the technology is Star Trek is infinately better than in Star Wars you have to factor in the fact that the ships and charachters in Star Wars, by the nature of Space Opera, get to ignore much of the rules that we normally attribute to the rules of reality.

Let's use an assault on a Borg Cube as our example. First we are going to use the rules of Space Opera since I'm writing this. If we use the rules of Hard Sci-fi than the out come would differ.

1. The good guys allways win.
2. The Borg ship's defences are built around fighting capital ships. Short range fighters should be able to sneak past them.
3. The Borg ship will have a weakness that the rebels were able to learn about through the efforts of Bothan Spies. Many Bothans, of course, died retrieving these plans.
4. A lone fighter flying into the middle of the Cube will have enough fire power to take out the entire cube by, let's say, shooting a proton torpedo into the reactor core.
5. The Borg leader will be distracted by trying to assimilate Luke Skywalker who is the son of his apprentice. I know borg don't have apprentices but that is no fun and does not fit into the space opera context.
6. The bulk of the Borg will be busy fighting rebel commandos and Ewoks on the moon of Endor. Why, because the script says they have to.
7. The starfighters get to break the rules of physics because they are designed after 1940's fighters. Borg weapons will have trouble targeting them.
8. One rebel kamikaze crashing into an enemy bridge is allways enough to take out any capital ship.

My point..Star Trek tecnology is loosely based on reality and would easily defeat Star wars technology wich is based on nothing more than imagination and what could be accomplished cheaply with easily found materials.

In order to match the two fairly you would have to obey the rules of both universes.
